The speaker said she was instructing House committee chairmen to move forward with articles of impeachment against President Trump; another hearing is scheduled for Monday.Nicholas Fandos
In her formal announcement, Speaker Pelosi said:
The facts are uncontested. The president abused his power for his own personal political benefit at the expense of our national security, by withholding military aid and crucial Oval Office meeting in exchange for an announcement of an investigation into his political rival.
The announcement was made a little over two months after Speaker Pelosi initiated the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Pelosi’s announcement on Thursday has made it possible for a vote of impeachment by December 20. According to The New York Times:
Democrats familiar with the matter believe the judiciary panel is on track to begin publicly debating and voting on articles by the end of next week, despite uniform Republican opposition….A precise timeline for the next two weeks is among a long list of significant unknowns as Democrats march forward with an impeachment whose outcome appears all but certain. The White House, for instance, has until Friday to notify the Judiciary Committee whether it intends to present a defense or recommend new witnesses for testimony. If it does, the panel could be compelled to add a day or more of additional hearings, slowing the process.Nicholas Fandos
In response to Pelosi’s press conference Thursday, President Trump tweeted:
The Do Nothing Democrats had a historically bad day yesterday in the House. They have no Impeachment case and are demeaning our Country. But nothing matters to them, they have gone crazy. Therefore I say, if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business. We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is. I was elected to “Clean the Swamp,” and that’s what I am doing!
